About the artist
Vampire Weekend is an American indie rock band formed in New York City, built around the songwriting of Ezra Koenig alongside Chris Baio and Chris Tomson, with Rostam Batmanglij a key member and producer through their first three albums. They emerged in the mid-2000s with a sound that fused indie rock with elements of Afropop guitar lines, baroque pop arrangements, and unusually literate, witty lyrics — a combination that set them apart from much of the era's indie scene.
Their self-titled 2008 debut, featuring songs like «Oxford Comma» and «A-Punk», established their signature blend of preppy imagery and buoyant, polyrhythmic guitar work. The follow-up, «Contra», pushed further into electronic and world-music textures, while «Modern Vampires of the City» marked a darker, more contemplative turn, earning widespread critical acclaim and a Grammy Award. Rostam departed the band in 2016 to focus on solo and production work, though he still contributed to the next record.
The band's later albums, «Father of the Bride» and «Only God Was Above Us», both debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, continuing to expand their sonic palette with country, jam-band, and denser orchestral influences while retaining Koenig's distinctive voice and lyrical sensibility. Songs such as «Hannah Hunt», «Diane Young», and «Harmony Hall» reflect the band's continued evolution, and Vampire Weekend remains one of the defining indie rock acts to emerge from the 2000s.
