underscores is the recording project of April Harper Grey, an American electronic musician and producer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. She has been writing and recording music since childhood and became a distinctive voice in the online hyperpop-adjacent scene, blending indie rock, bedroom pop, glitch and dance-influenced electronic production into a genre-fluid sound. She is also associated with the collective six impala and has collaborated under the alias curryrice with the artist SCRIPT.

Her 2021 debut full-length, fishmonger, established her as an artist unwilling to stay within a single genre lane, moving between distorted guitars, pop hooks and glitchy electronics within the same tracklist. She followed it later that year with boneyard aka fearmonger, expanding on that sonic palette with a rawer, more experimental edge.

In 2023, underscores began a new creative era centered on Wallsocket, a project built around a fictional town in Michigan and accompanied by an elaborate alternate reality game (ARG) that extended the world of the music into an interactive online mystery. The Wallsocket era cemented her reputation as one of the more inventive and narratively ambitious artists in the internet-native pop and electronic underground, known for pairing emotionally direct songwriting with maximalist, boundary-blurring production.
