Udit Narayan

Udit Narayan, born on 1 December 1955, is an Indian playback singer best known for his prolific career in Bollywood cinema, though he has also recorded extensively in Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, Bengali, Odia, Nepali and several other Indian languages. He began his playback career in Hindi cinema in the early 1980s, sharing songs with veteran singers Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar before establishing himself as a leading male voice of Bollywood.

His breakthrough came with the 1988 film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, where his rendition of «Papa Kehte Hain» won him his first Filmfare Award and set him on course to become one of the most sought-after playback singers of the following decades. His voice, warm and versatile, became closely associated with the romantic and youthful film soundtracks of the 1990s and 2000s, appearing on songs such as «Pehla Nasha» and «Tere Naam». He is notable for being the only male singer to win the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer across three consecutive decades — the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s.

Udit Narayan has received four National Film Awards and multiple honors from the Indian government, including the Padma Shri in 2009 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016, in recognition of his contribution to Indian cinema and music. He was also honored by Nepal for his cultural ties to the country. His extensive discography places him among the most recorded playback singers in the history of Indian film music.
