About the artist
The Supremes were an American vocal group formed in Detroit, Michigan, and one of the flagship acts of Motown Records during the 1960s. Fronted by Diana Ross, with Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson as founding members alongside her (Cindy Birdsong later joined the lineup), the group defined the polished, orchestrated Motown sound with its blend of pop, R&B and crossover appeal. Their close vocal harmonies, glamorous image and Holland-Dozier-Holland songwriting partnership turned them into one of the most successful vocal groups in American chart history.
Starting with «Where Did Our Love Go» in 1964, the Supremes racked up an extraordinary run of number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including «Baby Love», «Come See About Me», «Stop! In the Name of Love», «I Hear a Symphony», «You Can't Hurry Love» and «You Keep Me Hangin' On». This streak made them not only Motown's most commercially dominant act but a symbol of Black artists' crossover into mainstream American pop culture during the civil rights era.
The group's lineup evolved over the years, most notably with Diana Ross's eventual departure for a solo career, but the Supremes' mid-1960s catalogue remains a cornerstone of the Motown sound and a lasting influence on generations of pop and R&B vocal groups.
