The Ronettes

The Ronettes were an American girl group formed in New York City, fronted by lead singer Veronica «Ronnie» Bennett (later Ronnie Spector), alongside her sister Estelle Bennett and cousin Nedra Talley. Emerging in the early 1960s, they became one of the defining acts of the girl-group era, known for their towering beehive hairdos, streetwise glamour, and Ronnies distinctively powerful, emotive lead vocals.

The group is inseparable from producer Phil Spector, who signed them and built his famed «Wall of Sound» production around their voices. Their signature hit «Be My Baby» became one of the most influential pop singles of the era, admired by generations of musicians for its lush orchestration and propulsive drum intro, while songs like «Baby I Love You» and «Walking In the Rain» further showcased the interplay between Ronnies vocals and Spectors dense, cinematic arrangements. They also contributed to Spectors celebrated «A Christmas Gift for You» album with tracks like «Sleigh Ride».

Beyond their chart success, the Ronettes left a lasting imprint on pop and rock, influencing artists from the Beatles to Amy Winehouse, and their image and sound helped define the sonic ambition and visual style of 1960s American pop music.
