The Paper Kites

The Paper Kites are an Australian indie folk-rock band formed in Melbourne in 2010, built around vocalist and guitarist Sam Bentley alongside Christina Lacy, David Powys, Josh Bentley, and Sam Rasmussen. They emerged from the wave of hushed, harmony-driven acoustic acts of the early 2010s, gaining wide attention with their «States» EP and its breakout track «Bloom», which became a defining song of the era's folk revival.

Across albums like «States» (2013) and «twelvefour» (2015), the band's sound gradually shifted from delicate, banjo- and lap-steel-inflected folk toward a dreamier, more atmospheric and synth-tinged palette, a change most evident on «twelvefour», conceived as a nocturnal, ambient-leaning record. Later releases, including «On the Corner Where You Live» (2018) and «Roses» (2020), continued to explore warmer, more expansive Americana and dream-pop textures while retaining the layered vocal harmonies between Bentley and Lacy that have anchored the group's sound throughout.

Known for close, intimate arrangements and a strong visual and aesthetic sensibility in their releases, The Paper Kites have built a devoted following through consistent touring and a catalogue that traces a gradual evolution from folk-festival darlings to a more sonically adventurous indie act.
