The Midnight

The Midnight is a synthwave duo formed in Los Angeles in 2012, pairing Danish dance-music producer Tim McEwan with American folk singer-songwriter Tyler Lyle. The combination of McEwan's atmospheric, retro-synth production and Lyle's plaintive, story-driven vocals gave the project a sound that stood apart from much of the largely instrumental synthwave scene.

Where many synthwave acts lean purely on nostalgia and instrumental homage to 1980s film scores, The Midnight built a catalog of fully realized songs with lyrics steeped in longing, memory, and Americana-tinged melancholy — a philosophy the duo has tied to the Japanese concept of mono no aware, the bittersweet awareness of time passing. Tracks like «Sunset», «Los Angeles», and «Vampires» became genre touchstones, showcasing lush saxophone lines, driving arpeggios, and widescreen choruses.
