About the artist

The Kingston Trio were an American folk group formed in San Francisco in 1957, originally consisting of Dave Guard, Bob Shane and Nick Reynolds, who met while attending college in the Bay Area. Dressed in matching striped shirts and blending close vocal harmonies with acoustic guitars and banjo, the trio helped ignite the American folk music boom of the late 1950s and early 1960s, bringing traditional and topical songs to a mainstream pop audience.

Their 1958 recording of the traditional murder ballad «Tom Dooley» became a massive crossover hit, topping the pop charts and winning a Grammy Award, and is widely credited with sparking commercial interest in folk music across the United States. Follow-up favorites like «M.T.A.», «Scotch and Soda» and «Greenback Dollar» showcased their knack for turning old ballads and calypso-tinged tunes into polished, radio-friendly performances, while their cover of «Sloop John B» later influenced the Beach Boys' own version.

The group's lineup changed over the years, with John Stewart replacing Dave Guard in 1961, but the trio's clean-cut image and accessible sound kept them enormously popular through the early 1960s, paving the way for the singer-songwriter and folk-revival acts that followed, including Bob Dylan and Peter, Paul and Mary. Their influence on the commercial packaging of folk music remains a key chapter in American popular music history.
