The Irrepressibles

The Irrepressibles is the project of British vocalist, composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Jamie McDermott, who performs and is often credited as Jamie Irrepressible. Founded in the early 2000s, the project has always been built around McDermott's own songwriting, vocals and production, surrounded by a shifting ensemble of collaborating musicians rather than a fixed band lineup.

Musically, the Irrepressibles draw on art pop and baroque pop, layering McDermott's expressive, operatic voice over lush, chamber-influenced arrangements, with recurring threads of electronic production connecting the project to artists such as iamamiwhoami and Röyksopp, the latter of whom has remixed the group's work. That combination of orchestral grandeur and electronic texture gives the Irrepressibles a distinctive, theatrical sound that sits apart from conventional pop songwriting.

The visual and performative side of the project is inseparable from its music: live shows are staged as elaborate, choreographed audiovisual events that McDermott and the group have referred to as «spectacles», extending the emotional and dramatic intensity of the songs into costume, movement and lighting design. This commitment to theatricality, alongside openly queer and emotionally raw songwriting, has made the Irrepressibles a distinctive presence in art pop, admired as much for its live performance as for its recorded output.
