About the artist

The Irish Rovers are a Celtic folk group formed in 1963 in Toronto, Canada, by a group of young Irish immigrants who took their name from the traditional ballad «The Irish Rover». Blending traditional Irish balladry with a more accessible, radio-friendly folk-pop arrangement, the band became one of the most recognizable ambassadors of Irish music in North America, helping popularize songs like «The Unicorn» and «Drunken Sailor» far beyond folk-club audiences.

Over the decades the group built a repertoire drawing on traditional tunes such as «The Black Velvet Band», «Star of the County Down», and «Finnegan's Wake», alongside original compositions in the same spirit. Their sound is defined by warm vocal harmonies, banjo and fiddle-driven arrangements, and a good-humored, storytelling approach that made them popular both on record and on their own long-running Canadian television variety show.

The Irish Rovers helped bring Irish folk music into the North American mainstream during the folk revival era and remained active performers for decades afterward, touring internationally and continuing to celebrate the tradition that gave them their name.
