The Four Seasons

The Four Seasons are an American vocal group that rose to fame in the early 1960s, fronted by the distinctive falsetto of Frankie Valli and anchored by songwriter-keyboardist Bob Gaudio, alongside Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi. Emerging from the working-class Italian-American neighborhoods of New Jersey, the group had earlier performed under names like The Four Lovers before settling on The Four Seasons and quickly became one of the defining vocal-pop acts of the era, rivaling the Beach Boys and, later, the British Invasion bands for chart dominance.

Their sound married doo-wop harmonies with punchy pop-rock arrangements and Valli’s soaring falsetto lead, producing a string of hits including «Sherry», «Big Girls Don’t Cry», «Walk Like a Man» and «Rag Doll». Gaudio’s songwriting partnership with producer Bob Crewe was central to the group’s success, giving the Four Seasons a sound instantly recognizable on radio. As musical tastes shifted through the late 1960s and 1970s, the group adapted, scoring a major comeback hit with «December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)» in 1975.

The band’s story later reached a new generation through the Tony Award-winning jukebox musical «Jersey Boys», which dramatized their rise, internal conflicts and enduring legacy. Decades after their debut, the Four Seasons remain one of the best-selling vocal groups in pop history, celebrated for their tight harmonies and Valli’s unmistakable voice.
