The Foundations

The Foundations were a British multi-racial soul and pop group formed in London in January 1967, notable as one of the first mixed-race bands to achieve mainstream chart success in the UK. Their lineup drew members from diverse backgrounds including the West Indies and Sri Lanka, with lead vocals originally handled by Clem Curtis and a horn-driven sound anchored by saxophonists, a trombonist, and a rhythm section.

The group's breakthrough came with the single «Baby, Now That I've Found You», which initially struggled for attention but became a smash hit after BBC Radio 1 championed it, eventually topping the UK charts. Their sound blended Motown-influenced soul with British pop sensibilities, brass arrangements, and tight vocal harmonies, earning them recognition as authentic purveyors of soul music by critics of the era.

The Foundations followed up their early success with further hits including «Build Me Up Buttercup», which became one of their most enduring and internationally recognized songs. Their catalog, spanning soul, pop, and R&B textures, cemented their place in the story of British pop music during the late 1960s, both for their chart achievements and for the barriers they broke as a racially integrated act.
