The Emotions

The Emotions are an American vocal group from Chicago, Illinois, formed by sisters Wanda, Sheila, Jeanette and later Pamela Hutchinson. They began in the 1960s singing gospel as The Hutchinson Sunbeams before transitioning into secular soul and R&B, eventually becoming one of the defining female vocal groups of the 1970s.

The group reached its commercial peak after signing with Stax Records and later Columbia Records, where they worked with Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire, who produced their landmark 1977 album Rejoice. The lead single from that record, «Best of My Love», became a massive crossover hit, topping both the pop and R&B charts and earning the group a Grammy Award. Their sound blended tight, gospel-rooted harmonies with the polished funk and disco arrangements typical of the era, giving them a warmth and vocal precision that distinguished them from many contemporaries.

Beyond «Best of My Love», the group is remembered for songs like «Don't Ask My Neighbors» and «I Don't Wanna Lose Your Love», as well as their earlier Stax-era material. Their close family harmonies and gospel foundation influenced later generations of R&B vocal groups, and «Best of My Love» in particular remains a staple of soul and disco retrospectives.
