The Divine Comedy

The Divine Comedy is an orchestral pop project from Northern Ireland, effectively the vehicle for singer-songwriter Neil Hannon since its formation in the late 1980s. Blending baroque pop arrangements, theatrical wit, and literary influences, the band’s music stands apart from typical rock or pop for its lush strings, brass, and Hannon’s dry, often satirical lyrical voice.

Hannon has written or co-written virtually the entire catalog, drawing comparisons to figures like Noël Coward and Scott Walker for his blend of humor and grandeur. The project gained wider recognition in the UK through singles like «National Express» and «Something for the Weekend», and reached an even broader audience via «My Lovely Horse», written for the television series Father Ted, which became an unlikely novelty hit.
