About the artist

The Dillards are an American bluegrass band formed in Salem, Missouri, in the early 1960s by brothers Rodney and Doug Dillard along with Mitch Jayne and Dean Webb. After relocating to Los Angeles, they became one of the first bluegrass acts signed to a major label and gained wide exposure through recurring appearances on The Andy Griffith Show as the fictional Darling family, introducing traditional string-band music to a mainstream television audience.

Musically, the group paired virtuosic banjo and mandolin playing with tight vocal harmonies rooted in Ozark mountain tradition, while also pushing bluegrass toward folk-rock and country-rock textures, influencing acts such as the Byrds and Eagles as the California country-rock scene took shape in the late 1960s. Albums like Wheatstraw Suite and Copperfields showed the band experimenting with drums, electric instruments, and studio production while retaining their acoustic roots.

Over decades of lineup changes, The Dillards remained active performers and recording artists, celebrated as key figures in bringing bluegrass to a broader American audience and in shaping the country-rock sound that followed. Rodney Dillard continued leading incarnations of the group long after its formation.
