The Dø

The Dø is a French-Finnish duo formed by singer Olivia Merilahti and multi-instrumentalist Dan Levy, blending pop, rock, electronic, and even hip-hop-inflected elements into a genre-hopping sound built around Merilahti's distinctive, folk-tinged vocals and Levy's eclectic arrangements. Their name is a nod to the musical note «do» and to their own initials, and the band emerged from Paris in the mid-2000s before finding an audience well beyond France.

The duo's 2008 debut album «A Mouthful» became a landmark release, topping the French charts and making The Dø the first French act singing in English to reach that position. The record's mix of folk-pop warmth, quirky arrangements, and cinematic dynamics set the template for their sound, and songs such as «On My Shoulders» helped define their early identity. They followed it with «Both Ways Open Jaws», expanding into more electronic and rhythmically adventurous territory.

Across their catalog, tracks like «Miracles (Back In Time)», «Despair, Hangover & Ecstasy», «Only Takes A Night», «Dust It Off», «Too Insistent», and «Anita, No!» showcase the band's restless stylistic range, moving between hushed introspection and percussive, almost tribal energy. Known for their inventive live performances and intimate acoustic sessions, including Take Away Show recordings, The Dø carved out a reputation as one of the more distinctive and unpredictable acts to emerge from the French alternative scene.
