The Cinematic Orchestra

The Cinematic Orchestra is a British group formed by producer and composer Jason Swinscoe, working at the intersection of jazz, electronic music, and cinematic soundscape. Rather than a fixed band, the project has functioned as a rotating live and studio ensemble built around Swinscoe's production, blending improvised jazz playing — horns, piano, double bass — with sampling, turntablism, and studio manipulation, so the line between a live take and a produced track is often deliberately blurred.

The group is closely associated with the Ninja Tune label and the broader nu jazz and downtempo scene that emerged in the UK in the late 1990s and 2000s. Their music has frequently been paired with film and visual projects, most notably their score for the restored silent documentary «Man with a Movie Camera», reinforcing the strongly cinematic, atmospheric character of their sound. Vocal collaborations have played a key role in some of their best-known material, including work with Canadian singer-songwriter Patrick Watson on the widely covered and sampled track «To Build a Home», and with rapper Roots Manuva.
