The Chordettes

The Chordettes were an American vocal quartet formed in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, in the late 1940s, specializing in close-harmony a cappella and barbershop-influenced pop. Originally rooted in traditional barbershop quartet style, the group evolved through the 1950s into one of the era's most successful vocal pop acts, blending crisp four-part harmonies with playful, catchy arrangements that stood out on early rock and roll era radio.

The group is best remembered for its two signature hits, «Mr. Sandman» and «Lollipop», both built around tight vocal interplay, novelty sound effects, and infectious simplicity that made them enduring pop standards. Their repertoire also included takes on older popular songs such as «Hello! Ma Baby» and «Love’s Old Sweet Song», alongside mid-century favorites like «Eddie My Love», «Never on Sunday», and «Pink Shoelaces», showing a versatility that spanned nostalgic Tin Pan Alley material and contemporary novelty pop.

As one of the few all-female vocal groups to achieve major chart success in the pre-rock and early rock and roll era, the Chordettes helped keep close-harmony singing commercially relevant at a time when the genre was giving way to guitar-driven bands. Their sound, built entirely around vocal arrangement rather than instrumentation, left a lasting mark on doo-wop and vocal pop groups that followed.
