About the artist
The Barden Bellas are a fictional collegiate a cappella group at the center of the Pitch Perfect film franchise, which began in 2012 with Pitch Perfect and continued through Pitch Perfect 2 and Pitch Perfect 3. The group is based at the fictional Barden University and performs arranged mashups and covers rather than original material, drawing on pop, R&B and dance hits reworked into vocal-only arrangements with beatboxing standing in for instrumentation.
The Bellas' signature style is the mashup, most famously the blend of «Just the Way You Are» and «Just a Dream» performed as an audition piece, and later the iconic riff-off sequences that pit them against rival groups like the Treblemakers and the German ensemble Das Sound Machine. Their soundtrack covers, including versions of «Cups (When I’m Gone)», «Freedom! ’90» and «Cheap Thrills», became genuine chart and streaming successes independent of the films.
Beyond the box office, the Pitch Perfect soundtracks helped popularize a cappella and vocal-percussion arrangement as mainstream entertainment, influencing a wave of televised and collegiate a cappella interest in the 2010s. The ensemble cast, including Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson and Anna Camp, gave the fictional group a lasting pop-culture identity well beyond the films themselves.
