The Avalanches

The Avalanches are an Australian music group from Melbourne best known for pioneering a densely sample-based approach to electronic music. Their debut album Since I Left You (2000) was constructed almost entirely from thousands of sampled fragments woven into cohesive, melodic tracks, earning widespread critical acclaim and establishing them as one of the most inventive acts in plunderphonics and sample-based electronica.

After Since I Left You, the group became known almost as much for their prolonged silence as for their music, with sixteen years passing before their follow-up album Wildflower (2016). That record retained the layered, sample-heavy aesthetic while incorporating a wider array of guest vocalists and collaborators, updating their sound for a new era without abandoning its collage-based foundation. Tracks like «Frontier Psychiatrist» and «Since I Left You» remain touchstones of the group's original style, while later work such as «Frankie Sinatra» and «Because I'm Me» reflect the more feature-heavy, song-oriented direction of their later albums.

The Avalanches' work sits at the intersection of hip-hop production technique, psychedelic pop sensibility, and dance music, and their meticulous sample-collage method has influenced a generation of producers working across electronic and hip-hop genres.
