About the artist

The Abyssinians are a Jamaican roots reggae vocal trio formed in Kingston in 1968 by Bernard Collins and Donald Manning, later joined by Donald's brother Lynford. They emerged from the rocksteady scene — several members had roots in the related group Carlton and the Shoes — and helped define the sound and spiritual outlook of early roots reggae. The trio became known for tight, church-inflected three-part harmonies layered over slow, hypnotic rhythms, and for lyrics steeped in Rastafarian faith, Pan-Africanism, and calls for repatriation to Africa.

Their signature song, «Satta Massagana», first recorded around 1969, is one of the most influential and widely covered tracks in reggae history. Sung partly in Amharic, it functions almost as a Rasta hymn and drew melodically on Carlton Manning's earlier composition «Happy Land». Despite its now-legendary status, the song struggled to find a label willing to release it at the time, and the group eventually issued it themselves, cementing their reputation as independent-minded artists working outside the commercial mainstream of Jamaican music.

Beyond «Satta Massagana», The Abyssinians built a catalogue of dub and vocal versions — including «Mandela» and «Mandela Part 2» — along with socially conscious material like «Let My Days Be Long» and interpretations of songs such as «Blowin' in the Wind». Their work influenced generations of roots reggae artists and remains a foundational reference point for the genre's spiritual and harmonic identity.
