山下達郎 (Tatsuro Yamashita)

Tatsuro Yamashita is a Japanese singer, songwriter, and producer widely regarded as one of the founding figures of city pop, the sophisticated, groove-driven pop sound that emerged in Japan in the late 1970s and 1980s. Before launching his solo career, he was a member of the band Sugar Babe and later took part in the Niagara Triangle project, experiences that shaped his meticulous, richly arranged approach to production.

Across an extensive solo discography of studio albums, live releases, and compilations, Yamashita became one of the best-selling male solo artists in Japanese music history. His sound blends smooth R&B grooves, intricate vocal harmonies, and polished pop songcraft, heard on tracks such as «RIDE ON TIME», «SPARKLE», and the now widely celebrated «Plastic Love». He also composed extensively for film, television, and commercials, further cementing his influence on Japan's popular music landscape.

Notoriously private as a performer, Yamashita rarely toured internationally, avoided large venues, and limited live footage of himself, preferring smaller spaces where his music could connect directly with audiences. He has said he was never driven by chart success but by creative control and the refinement of his own sound. He is married to fellow city pop artist Mariya Takeuchi, and together they remain two of the genre's most influential figures.
