About the artist
Sylvia Plath (October 27, 1932 – February 11, 1963) was an American poet and novelist whose intense, confessional style made her one of the most influential literary figures of the 20th century. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, to a German-immigrant father who died when she was eight, Plath showed early literary promise, publishing work before attending Smith College, from which she graduated with highest honors. A severe depressive episode and suicide attempt in her early twenties led to psychiatric hospitalization, an experience that would later shape both her poetry and her autobiographical novel.
A Fulbright scholarship brought her to Newnham College, Cambridge, where she met and later married poet Ted Hughes; their relationship and its eventual breakdown became central material for her later, most searing work. Plath's poetry, especially the pieces gathered in the posthumous collection Ariel, is marked by raw emotional intensity, vivid and often violent imagery, and unflinching engagement with themes of death, identity, the body, and family, most famously in poems like «Daddy» and «Lady Lazarus».
Works such as «Mirror», «Mushrooms», «Metaphors», «The Arrival of the Bee Box», «The Moon and the Yew Tree», and «Cut» showcase her precise, controlled language paired with startling emotional force. Though she died by suicide at thirty, Plath's writing, later recognized with a posthumous Pulitzer Prize, cemented her as a defining voice of confessional poetry, whose unflinching exploration of pain continues to resonate with readers.
