Stan Rogers

Stan Rogers (1949–1983) was a Canadian folk singer-songwriter renowned for his deep, resonant baritone and his meticulously crafted songs steeped in Canadian history and the lives of working people. Raised with strong family ties to the Maritime provinces, he became closely associated with the fishing communities of Nova Scotia and later turned his attention to the farms of the prairies and the Great Lakes, writing narrative songs that felt as old and durable as traditional sea shanties even though they were entirely his own compositions.

Over a career cut tragically short, Rogers released four studio albums that became foundational texts of modern Canadian folk music. Songs such as «Barrett's Privateers», «Northwest Passage», and «The Mary Ellen Carter» combined vivid storytelling with strong melodic hooks and a sense of historical weight, often performed with minimal, traditional instrumentation that let his voice and lyrics carry the material. His writing balanced hardship and hope, frequently celebrating resilience, labor, and place with a specificity that distinguished him from more generic folk songwriting of the era.

Rogers died at 33 in a fire aboard Air Canada Flight 797 in 1983, cutting short what was already a formative body of work. Despite the brevity of his career, his songs have been widely covered and remain staples of folk repertoires in Canada and beyond, cementing his reputation as one of the defining voices of Canadian folk music.
