About the artist
Stan Getz (born Stanley Gayetski, 1927–1991) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist celebrated as one of the instrument's greatest voices. Nicknamed «The Sound» for his warm, lyrical tone, he drew heavily on the light, breathy phrasing of his idol Lester Young, and rose to prominence in the late 1940s as a member of Woody Herman's «Four Brothers» sax section before establishing himself as a leading figure of cool jazz and bebop through the 1950s.
Getz's most transformative period came in the early 1960s when he embraced bossa nova after encountering Brazilian musicians João Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim. His collaborations with them produced landmark recordings, most famously «The Girl from Ipanema» (1964), which became an international hit and introduced bossa nova to American audiences on a massive scale. The «Getz/Gilberto» sessions, featuring songs like «Corcovado» and «Desafinado», remain touchstones of the genre and helped define an entire era of jazz-pop crossover.
Beyond bossa nova, Getz recorded prolifically across decades in bebop, cool, and later fusion-inflected settings, working with figures ranging from Charlie Parker's generation to younger players in his later bands. His fluid, singing tone and effortless improvisational sense influenced generations of saxophonists, and his bossa nova recordings in particular remain among the most widely recognized jazz records ever made.
