Squeeze

Squeeze are an English band formed in Deptford, south-east London, in 1974 by the songwriting duo Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, whose partnership became the band's creative core. Emerging alongside the new wave movement of the late 1970s, Squeeze distinguished themselves from their punk-adjacent peers through witty, character-driven storytelling and a strong melodic pop sensibility, drawing frequent comparisons to Lennon-McCartney — a label Difford and Tilbrook have publicly resisted, preferring to be seen simply as pop songwriters rather than a new wave act.

The band's run of late-1970s and early-1980s singles, including «Cool for Cats», «Up the Junction», «Tempted» and «Pulling Mussels (From the Shell)», established them as sharp observers of English suburban and urban life, pairing vivid lyrical vignettes with hook-heavy arrangements. «Up the Junction» in particular is remembered for its tightly constructed narrative told entirely without a chorus, a hallmark of the Difford-Tilbrook songwriting approach.

Squeeze broke up in 1982, reformed in 1985, split again in 1999, and reunited once more in 2007, continuing to tour and record in the decades since — including the 2015 album Cradle to the Grave. Across lineup changes, the band has retained Difford and Tilbrook at its center, with later editions featuring musicians such as Simon Hanson, Steve Large, Steve Smith and Yolanda Charles, keeping the group's blend of pub-rock energy and pop songcraft alive well beyond their initial new wave heyday.
