Soft Cell

Soft Cell is an English synthpop duo formed in 1978 by vocalist Marc Almond and instrumentalist David Ball, originating from Leeds. Emerging from the early-1980s British electronic scene, they helped define synthpop with a stark, minimalist sound built on synthesizers and drum machines, paired with Almond's dramatic, theatrical vocal delivery.

The duo achieved worldwide fame with their 1981 cover of Gloria Jones's «Tainted Love», which topped the UK charts and became a Top 10 hit in the US, going on to become one of the best-known singles of the era. Other tracks such as «Say Hello, Wave Goodbye» and «Bedsitter» showcased their gift for combining catchy pop hooks with darker, more melancholic themes of nightlife, loneliness and desire.

Soft Cell's influence extended well beyond their initial run, shaping later generations of synthpop and electronic artists with their blend of pop sensibility and moody, club-inflected atmosphere. Marc Almond went on to a prominent solo career, while the duo has periodically reunited over the decades for new material and live performances.
