Sinéad O'Connor

Sinéad O'Connor was an Irish singer-songwriter whose striking voice, shaved head and outspoken personality made her one of the most distinctive artists to emerge from the late-1980s alternative rock scene. She was discovered performing with her band Ton Ton Macoute and signed to Ensign Records, releasing her debut album The Lion and the Cobra in 1987, which earned a Grammy nomination and established her as a powerful new voice in rock.

Global fame arrived in 1990 with her haunting cover of Prince's «Nothing Compares 2 U», taken from her second album I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got. The stripped-down video, dominated by a close-up of her face and a single tear, became iconic and the song topped charts worldwide. Her music blended rock, pop and traditional Irish influences with raw, confessional lyrics on tracks like «Troy», «Mandinka» and «The Emperor's New Clothes».

O'Connor was equally known for her uncompromising activism and willingness to court controversy, including her protest against the Catholic Church, which overshadowed her music for years but was later widely reassessed as prescient. Songs such as «Black Boys on Mopeds» and «Famine» reflected her engagement with political and social issues.
