About the artist
Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, known simply as Selena, was a Mexican-American singer from Lake Jackson, Texas, celebrated as the «Queen of Tejano music.» Performing from childhood with her family band Selena y Los Dinos, she broke through commercially in the early 1990s, bringing Tejano — a genre blending Mexican regional sounds with pop, country, and cumbia — to unprecedented mainstream visibility.
Her albums, including Entre a Mi Mundo and Amor Prohibido, produced enduring hits such as «Como La Flor», «Bidi Bidi Bom Bom», and the title track «Amor Prohibido», showcasing her powerful voice, charismatic stage presence, and bold fashion sense. Her live album Selena Live! won the Grammy for Best Mexican/American Album in 1994, making her the first female Tejano artist to receive that honor.
Selena was murdered in March 1995 at age 23, a loss that sent shockwaves through the Latin music world and beyond. Her posthumous English-language crossover album Dreaming of You cemented her legacy, and she remains one of the most influential and beloved figures in Latin American music history.
