Sarah McLachlan

Sarah McLachlan (born January 28, 1968) is a Canadian singer-songwriter whose mezzo-soprano voice and sweeping, atmospheric ballads made her one of the defining adult-contemporary artists of the 1990s. Raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia, she signed to Nettwerk Records as a teenager and released her breakthrough albums Solace (1991) and Fumbling Towards Ecstasy (1993) before reaching a global audience with Surfacing (1997), home to «Building a Mystery», «Adia» and «Angel».

«Angel» in particular became one of the most recognizable ballads of its decade, later used across film, television and charity campaigns, and cemented McLachlan's reputation for emotionally direct songwriting paired with lush, piano-and-strings production. Her voice also became closely associated with animation and film soundtracks, most notably «When She Loved Me» from Toy Story 2.

Beyond her own catalogue, McLachlan is widely credited for founding Lilith Fair in 1997, a touring festival showcasing women in music that ran for three summers and later returned briefly in 2010, reshaping how the industry booked and marketed female artists. Her later albums, including Afterglow (2003) and Shine On (2014), continued her blend of pop, folk and understated electronic textures, and she remains a touchstone for singer-songwriters working in reflective, melody-forward balladry.
