Šaban Bajramović

Šaban Bajramović was a Romani singer from Niš, in southern Serbia, widely celebrated as one of the greatest voices in Romani music and often dubbed the king of Gypsy music. Drawing on Romani folk tradition, Balkan brass, and elements of jazz and soul, he developed a powerful, gravelly vocal style that became instantly recognizable across the former Yugoslavia and beyond.

His career spanned several decades and survived considerable personal hardship, including time spent in prison, an experience that shaped both his legend and his music. He became known for songs performed in the Romani language, most notably «Đelem, đelem», a piece closely associated with Romani identity, alongside a wide repertoire of traditional and original compositions. His music combined raw emotional delivery with the rhythmic drive of Balkan Romani brass ensembles.

Bajramović's influence extended well beyond the Balkans; his work was embraced internationally by world-music audiences and cited as an inspiration by musicians working in Balkan and Gypsy-jazz idioms. He remains one of the most iconic figures in the history of Romani music, remembered for a voice and stage presence that turned personal hardship into some of the genre's most enduring recordings.
