Rick Astley

Rick Astley is an English singer born Richard Paul Astley on February 6, 1966, in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire. He began as a drummer and later lead vocalist in the local band FBI before being signed to Pete Waterman's PWL Studios, where he worked as the production trio Stock Aitken Waterman's protégé. His 1987 single «Never Gonna Give You Up» became a global number-one hit, its blend of blue-eyed soul and glossy late-80s dance-pop, combined with Astley's deep baritone, contrasting memorably with his youthful appearance.

The song's staying power took on a second life decades later through the internet phenomenon known as rickrolling, cementing Astley's place in pop culture far beyond his original chart run. His debut album Whenever You Need Somebody produced further hits including «Together Forever» and «Whenever You Need Somebody», all built on the polished, hook-driven PWL production style that defined much of the era's British pop.

Astley won a Brit Award for Best Single for «Never Gonna Give You Up» in 1988 and later received the «Best Act Ever» award at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards, reflecting the song's viral resurgence. He has continued releasing music in the decades since, including the album 50 in 2016, which topped the UK charts and marked a commercially successful return.
