Rick and Morty

Rick and Morty is an American adult animated science-fiction sitcom created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon for Adult Swim, premiering in December 2013. It follows the misadventures of the alcoholic, nihilistic genius scientist Rick Sanchez and his anxious grandson Morty Smith as they travel across dimensions and galaxies, alongside the rest of the dysfunctional Smith family. The show grew out of a short film Roiland made as a Back to the Future parody for the animation festival Channel 101, which Adult Swim later developed into a full series with Harmon.

Music plays an unusually large role in the show's identity: original songs and score, often performed in-universe by characters, became genuine hits in their own right, most notably «Get Schwifty» and «Goodbye Moonmen», the latter featuring Chaos Chaos. The show has also built soundtracks and standalone singles around key emotional or comedic moments, blending pop, electronic, and orchestral elements with absurdist humor.

Beyond music, Rick and Morty is known for its bleak, philosophically loaded comedy, dense multiverse mythology, and willingness to undercut its own sentimentality with nihilism, earning it a large, devoted fanbase and multiple Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program.
