Rex Orange County

Rex Orange County, born Alexander James O'Connor on May 4, 1998, is a British singer-songwriter from Grayshott, a village in Hampshire, England. At sixteen he was accepted into London's BRIT School, where he began writing and recording the songs that would define his early sound. His stage name grew out of a nickname a teacher gave him from his initials, OC, combined with a name he simply liked, Rex.

He first drew wider attention through a collaboration with the Canadian jazz-funk group BADBADNOTGOOD and an early endorsement from Tyler, The Creator, who featured him on the album Flower Boy. His own records, including the mixtape bcos u will never b free and the albums Apricot Princess, Pony and Who Cares?, blend indie pop, bedroom R&B, jazz-inflected chords and lo-fi electronic textures with plainspoken, often self-deprecating lyrics about love, anxiety and growing up.

Songs like «Best Friend», «Sunflower» and «Loving Is Easy» became generational favorites for their warmth and DIY charm, while later work such as «Pluto Projector» and «Happiness» showed a more polished, orchestral direction. Rex Orange County remains one of the defining voices of the 2010s bedroom-pop and alternative R&B scene that emerged around the BRIT School and its circle of collaborators.
