Rebecca Sugar

Rebecca Sugar is an American animator, writer, and composer best known as the creator of the Cartoon Network series Steven Universe. She began her career in animation as a storyboard artist on Adventure Time before departing the show to develop her own project, which premiered in 2013 and made her the first woman to independently create a series for the network.

As both showrunner and songwriter, Sugar wrote and composed much of the show's music herself, blending pop, rock, and electronic textures with a distinctly theatrical, emotionally direct songwriting style. Tracks like «Steven Universe Theme», «Time Adventure», and «It's Only Magic» reflect her background in musical storytelling, often written to serve specific character arcs and narrative beats within the show rather than as standalone singles.

Steven Universe became known for weaving personal and social themes into a children's animation format, with Sugar citing her own experience as a bisexual woman as an influence on the show's approach to love and identity.
