Rahat Fateh Ali Khan

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is a Pakistani vocalist best known as one of the leading contemporary exponents of qawwali, the devotional Sufi music tradition. Born into a musical dynasty in Faisalabad, he is the nephew of the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and comes from a lineage of qawwals stretching back generations. He began performing alongside his uncle as a child and, after Nusrat's death in 1997, took on the mantle of leading the family's qawwali party, carrying forward its distinctive vocal traditions.

While rooted in qawwali, Rahat has become equally famous as a playback singer for Bollywood and Pakistani cinema, lending his powerful, emotionally expressive voice to countless film soundtracks. His ability to move between traditional Sufi devotional singing, ghazals, and mainstream film songs has made him one of the most recognizable voices in South Asian popular music, with hits spanning romantic ballads and spiritually charged compositions.

His singing is marked by extended, ornamented vocal improvisation rooted in classical and Sufi technique, applied to both traditional qawwali settings and modern pop arrangements. Songs like «Afreen Afreen» — originally popularized by his uncle and later reinterpreted by Rahat himself — highlight his role as both an inheritor and continuer of the qawwali tradition into the contemporary era.
