About the artist
Prince, born Prince Rogers Nelson on June 7, 1958, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, was an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer widely regarded as one of the most innovative and prolific musicians of his era. A childhood marked by epileptic seizures and a difficult family life pushed him toward music early, and by his teens he was already writing songs and honing the guitar, keyboard, and production skills that would let him play nearly every instrument on his own recordings.
His sound fused funk, R&B, rock, pop, and new wave into a style so distinctive it helped define what became known as the «Minneapolis sound», marked by synthesizer-driven grooves, sexually charged lyricism, and virtuosic guitar work. Albums and songs like «1999», «Little Red Corvette», «Purple Rain», «Sign O’ the Times», and «Kiss» showcased his range, from stadium-ready rock anthems to intimate ballads, while «Nothing Compares 2 U», written for Sinead O’Connor, demonstrated his reach as a songwriter for other artists.
Beyond the music, Prince was known for his flamboyant persona, his battles with his record label over creative control and artist rights, his brief period performing under an unpronounceable symbol in the 1990s, and his enduring influence on generations of R&B, pop, and funk artists. His combination of technical mastery, genre fluidity, and fierce independence left a legacy that continues to shape popular music long after his career’s peak.
