She first gained national attention as a finalist on the second season of the television talent show Fabrika Zvyozd (Star Factory), which launched her recording career in the mid-2000s. She went on to become one of the most prominent voices in Russian mainstream pop, known for emotionally charged ballads alongside more upbeat, electronic-tinged material.

Gagarina reached her widest international audience representing Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2015 with «A Million Voices», finishing as runner-up and turning the song into one of the best-known Russian pop exports of the decade.
