Peso Pluma

Peso Pluma, born Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija on June 15, 1999, in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico, is one of the defining voices behind the global rise of Mexican regional music in the 2020s. He took his stage name from boxer Marco Antonio Barrera, a featherweight (peso pluma) champion, after crossing paths with him early in his career. Starting out around 2019 alongside his cousin Roberto Laija, he released his debut album Ah y Que? in 2020 through the independent label El Cartel de Los Angeles.

His sound blends traditional corridos and Sierreno with trap, hip-hop and pop textures, a hybrid often labeled corridos tumbados that helped bridge Mexican regional music with international urban audiences. After signing with Prajin Music Group and releasing the EP Sembrando in 2022, he broke through internationally in 2023 with collaborations alongside major corridos artists and hits like «LADY GAGA» and «BIPOLAR», becoming one of the most streamed Latin artists worldwide.

Beyond corridos, Peso Pluma has experimented with reggaeton, electronic and pop-leaning tracks such as «LUNA» and «SANTAL 33», reflecting his effort to push regional Mexican music beyond its traditional boundaries while keeping its narrative storytelling roots intact.
