Payung Teduh

Payung Teduh is an Indonesian band from Jakarta whose music blends folk, keroncong and jazz influences into a distinctive, understated indie sound. The group grew out of a friendship between Mohammad Istiqamah Djamad (known as Is) and Comi Aziz Kariko, who began performing together informally around the University of Indonesia before formalizing the band in the late 2000s and later adding a drummer and a guitarlele player.

Rather than fitting neatly into a single genre, Payung Teduh built a sound centered on Is's distinctive vocal delivery, gentle acoustic arrangements and nostalgic, poetic lyrics that draw on older Indonesian musical traditions. Their self-titled debut album, released around 2010, established this identity, and songs like «Akad» and «Untuk Perempuan Yang Sedang Dalam Pelukan» later became widely beloved, with «Akad» in particular reaching a huge new audience through viral covers years after its release.

The band is regarded as an important part of Indonesia's independent music scene, credited with popularizing a warmer, more traditional-leaning alternative to mainstream Indonesian pop, and their songs remain staples of Indonesian indie and acoustic playlists.
