The Original Broadway Cast of The Book of Mormon recorded the album for the 2011 musical created by Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and Robert Lopez. Blending the crude, satirical humor of South Park with the earnest structure of a classic Broadway musical, the show follows two young Mormon missionaries, Elder Price and Elder Cunningham, sent to a remote Ugandan village, where their idealism collides with poverty, disease, and local skepticism toward organized religion.

The original cast, led by Andrew Rannells as Elder Price and Josh Gad as Elder Cunningham, alongside Rory O’Malley, Nikki M. James, and Michael Potts, brought manic comic energy and genuine vocal power to songs like «Hello!», «I Believe», «Turn It Off», and «Hasa Diga Eebowai», a number whose deliberately shocking title parodies «Hakuna Matata». The score draws on classic musical theatre pastiche while pushing lyrical content into deliberately provocative territory.

The production swept the 2011 Tony Awards, winning Best Musical among others, and the original cast recording won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. It remains one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed original musicals of the 2010s.
