The Original Broadway Cast of RENT recorded the cast album for Jonathan Larson’s rock musical, which opened on Broadway in 1996 after a celebrated run at New York Theatre Workshop. Loosely based on Puccini’s «La Bohème», RENT follows a group of young artists and friends in New York’s East Village grappling with poverty, love, art, and the AIDS epidemic. The show became a cultural phenomenon, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Musical, and it launched the careers of several of its original stars.
