Nicole Dollanganger

Nicole Dollanganger is a Canadian singer-songwriter and visual artist from Scarborough, Ontario, whose stage name references V.C. Andrews's Dollanganger book series. She began sharing lo-fi, ambient home recordings on Tumblr in 2012, quickly building a devoted underground following drawn to her hushed vocals and unsettling, diary-like lyrics that mix childhood imagery with themes of violence, abuse and Americana gone sour.

Her profile rose sharply with the 2015 album Natural Born Losers, released through Erie Organization, a label the musician Grimes created specifically to put the record out, calling the songs too important not to be heard. Dollanganger subsequently toured as a supporting act with Grimes, exposing her fragile, folk-tinged sound to a much wider audience while retaining the raw, bedroom-pop aesthetic of her earliest work.

Songs such as «Chapel», «Dog Teeth» and «Ugly» show her range, from gothic Americana to spare acoustic ballads, often exploring trauma, faith and rural decay with disarming tenderness.
