Mukesh

Mukesh Chand Mathur (1923–1976), known simply as Mukesh, was one of the most beloved playback singers of Indian, particularly Hindi, cinema's Golden Age. Born in New Delhi, he showed an early love for classical music and was first noticed for his singing talent by a distant relative at a family wedding, which led him to Mumbai and set him on the path toward a singing career.

Mukesh became especially renowned as the singing voice most closely associated with actor Raj Kapoor, lending his warm, melancholic tone to songs like «Awara Hoon» that became emblematic of Kapoor's on-screen persona and of an entire era of Hindi film music. His voice carried an emotional sincerity that made him a favorite for romantic and reflective songs, heard in classics such as «Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaye», «Chandan Sa Badan Chanchal Chitwan» and «Kisi Ki Muskurahaton Pe».

Despite early setbacks, including unsuccessful attempts at an acting career and periods of financial hardship, Mukesh persevered and went on to record hundreds of songs across decades, working alongside the era's leading music directors and lyricists. He remains remembered as one of the defining voices of the golden age of Bollywood playback singing, whose recordings continue to be cherished by generations of listeners.
