Mohammed Rafi

Mohammed Rafi (1924-1980) was one of the most celebrated playback singers in the history of Indian cinema, active in Hindi-language film music from the 1940s through his death in 1980. Born in Punjab (in what was then undivided India), he moved to Bombay to pursue a singing career and quickly became one of the dominant male voices of the golden age of Bollywood soundtracks, lending his voice to leading actors across four decades.

Rafi was renowned for extraordinary versatility, moving effortlessly between romantic ballads, devotional songs, patriotic anthems, comic numbers, and qawwalis, often within the same film. His collaborations with composers such as Naushad, Shankar-Jaikishan, and O. P. Nayyar produced many of Hindi cinema's most enduring melodies, and he sang for stars like Dilip Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, and Rajendra Kumar, becoming their de facto singing voice.

Songs such as «Chaudhvin Ka Chand» and «Likhe Jo Khat Tujhe» remain touchstones of Indian popular music and are still widely performed and covered today. Rafi's death triggered an outpouring of public mourning across India, a testament to how deeply his voice was woven into the country's cultural fabric.
