Maverick City Music

Maverick City Music is an American worship collective founded in 2018 by Tony Brown (of Housefires) and Jonathan Jay. Rather than functioning as a fixed band, it operates as a rotating community of singers, songwriters and musicians who gather at writing camps to create contemporary Christian and gospel music that deliberately crosses genre lines, blending R&B, soul, pop and traditional worship textures.

The collective became known for pairing Black gospel vocal traditions with the CCM (contemporary Christian music) format, a combination that had historically stayed segregated in the industry. Frequent voices associated with the project include Chandler Moore, Naomi Raine, Brandon Lake and Dante Bowe, among many rotating contributors, giving each release a different vocal character depending on who is featured.

Maverick City Music released a string of acclaimed volumes beginning with Maverick City Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 in 2019, followed by further volumes, a Christmas record, and the Jubilee project. Songs such as «Promises», «Firm Foundation (He Won’t)» and «Refiner» became widely sung in churches and streamed heavily outside traditional gospel audiences, and the group has collaborated with artists like Elevation Worship and UPPERROOM, helping reshape mainstream worship music in the early 2020s.
