Matoma

Matoma is the stage name of Tom Stræte Lagergren, a Norwegian DJ and producer from Åsnes who built his reputation on tropical-house remixes that blend electronic production with elements of reggae, dancehall, and Afrobeat rhythm. He first studied to become a music teacher before pivoting fully into production, and his international breakthrough came in 2015 with a remix of The Notorious B.I.G.’s «Old Thing Back», which climbed into the upper reaches of the Billboard Hot 100 and introduced his island-tinged sound to a global audience.

Following that success, Matoma quickly became a fixture on the festival circuit, including a Coachella performance in 2016, and expanded into remixing and collaborating with major pop and hip-hop artists such as Eminem, Enrique Iglesias, and Jennifer Lopez. His original productions, including «False Alarm» and «Wonderful Life (Mi Oh My)», carried forward the same sun-drenched, percussion-driven aesthetic that defined his remix work, helping popularize tropical house as a distinct radio-friendly strand of dance music in the mid-to-late 2010s.

Matoma’s catalog reflects a consistent throughline: cheerful, rhythmically buoyant productions built for both festival stages and mainstream playlists, often built around vocal samples or guest features layered over his signature marimba-and-steel-drum-inflected beats.
