About the artist
Mark Bernes (born Mark Naumovich Neiman, 1911, Nizhyn, Russian Empire) was one of the most beloved Soviet singers and film actors of the twentieth century. He began his career as an extra and stage actor in Kharkiv and later Moscow theatres before moving into cinema in the 1930s, where his roles in Soviet films of the era brought him wide popularity even before his singing career took off.
Bernes became a defining voice of Soviet wartime and postwar song, performing with a restrained, conversational delivery rather than formal operatic training — a style that made his interpretations feel deeply personal and sincere. His performance of «Тёмная ночь» in the 1943 film «Два бойца» became one of the most iconic songs of the Great Patriotic War, and he remained closely associated with war-themed repertoire throughout his career.
His later recording of «Журавли» (1969), about soldiers who never returned from war, became one of the most enduring memorial songs in Russian culture and is still performed at Victory Day commemorations. Other signature songs include «С чего начинается Родина» and «Враги сожгли родную хату». Bernes remains a central figure in the Soviet song tradition, remembered as much for his unadorned emotional honesty as for his fame as an actor.
