About the artist
Mariah Carey is an American singer-songwriter and producer born on March 27, 1969, in Huntington, New York. Discovered by Columbia Records executive Tommy Mottola, she released her self-titled debut album in 1990, which topped the Billboard 200 for eleven consecutive weeks and launched her as one of the defining pop and R&B vocalists of her era, celebrated for her five-octave range and use of the whistle register.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s Carey produced a string of chart-topping singles, including «Hero», «Fantasy», «My All» and, following her 2005 comeback album The Emancipation of Mimi, «We Belong Together». Her holiday single «All I Want for Christmas Is You» has become one of the most enduring seasonal songs of the modern era, returning to the top of charts annually decades after its release.
Carey's sound blends pop songcraft with deep R&B and gospel-influenced vocal technique, and she has collaborated with a wide range of producers and artists across hip-hop and R&B, helping popularize the pairing of pop vocals with rap features. With record sales estimated in the hundreds of millions, she remains one of the best-selling music artists in history and a major influence on generations of vocalists.
