About the artist
Manu Chao is a French-born singer-songwriter of Spanish descent, born in Paris in 1961, who became one of the most influential figures in world and alternative music. He first rose to prominence as the frontman of Mano Negra, a genre-blending French rock band active from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s that mixed punk, rock, salsa and Latin rhythms and toured widely across Latin America. After the band's breakup, Chao spent time traveling through South America, an experience that deeply shaped his solo work.
His 1998 solo debut «Clandestino» became a landmark album of the era, fusing reggae, ska, rumba, rock and Latin American folk into a distinctive, multilingual sound sung in French, Spanish, Portuguese and English. Songs such as «Bongo Bong», «Clandestino» and «Desaparecido» turned him into a global ambassador for a borderless, politically conscious brand of pop music. He followed it with «Próxima Estación: Esperanza» and later «La Radiolina», cementing a sound built on lo-fi loops, street-recorded samples and infectious melodies.
Manu Chao is closely associated with themes of migration, social justice and Latin American solidarity, and songs like «Me Gustas Tu» and «Welcome to Tijuana» remain widely recognized anthems. His work bridges French chanson, Latin rhythms and global pop, making him one of the defining voices of world music in the late 1990s and 2000s.
